On April 24, 2015, I co-directed an innovation workshop called #OneDayKC with Zach Pettet from UMKC and Sarah Jones from Rockhurst University. We brought together 30 students from 7 universities in the region to design the future of Kansas City by leveraging technology, developing sustainable infrastructure, and building community. We had a half dozen amazing mentors that contributed their expertise in mobile tech, service design, architecture and urban planning, and many other fields. Educators, visionaries, entrepreneurs, and city officials congregated to help our students create a smart city that catalyzes personal empowerment, process efficiency, and powerful economic growth. We traveled through the most innovative spaces in KC: The UMKC Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Think Big Partners, Sprint Accelerator, and historic Union Station. The day resulted in some amazing team pitches for products and services that both taught students the process of innovation and taught the community the versatility and vibrance of our young future-thinkers. Thanks to everyone who played a part in the day, you were so instrumental to its success.
